In this presentation, we helped save the manatees from going extinct
Project
For this project, we made an instagram and a website to raise awareness to save the manatees
Overview |
In this project, we became experts in ecological science so we could figure out how to save this species. We spent a week studying what ecology was, and then spent two more weeks becoming more familiar with ecological concepts. We then spent a week creating our website and instagram as well as publisize it so people were able to visit and learn how to save these creatures.
Reflection
One peak I had in this project was work ethic. I spent a lot of this project working harder then I have in the past, and have also maintained a higher quality of work. I will continue to work hard in the futuree and make sure my work is done efficiently. Another peak I had in the group was quality of work. The work that was produced this project is something I am very proud to have made and would be some of my best work that I have contributed to this year. I will continue to have the same amount of work quality in the coming years
One pit I had in this project was communication. Most of the time I would be doing my work on my own and would fail to communicate what I wanted done to my other group members. In future projects I will make sure I let all group members know what I want done from them. Another pit I had in this project was time management. Unlike in other projects I was working on this project up until the last minute. In the future, I will make sure that I have all my work done in a timely manner and do a lot less procrastination

Concepts
TCarrying Capacity-The maximum amount of organisms supported by an environment. Manatees are affected by carrying capacity because there is only so much space they can live in
Biotic Factor-any living factors in an environment. Some biotic factors that affect manatees are the plants they eat and their predators
Abiotic Factor-any nonliving factor in an environment. Some abiotic factors that affect manatees are the water they swim in and the sun that feeds their plants
Mutualism-an interaction of species that benefits both species. We can see this in the manatees environments between zooplankton and phytoplankton, where the zooplankton produces nitrogen the phytoplankton needs and the zooplankton eats the phytoplankton
Competition-an interaction between species where they are both competing for resources. We can see competition in the manatee's environments between sharks and aligators competing for food.
Predation/Parasitism-an interaction between species where one species benefits at the expense of another. We can see predation in the manatee's environment between sharks and manatees where the sharks consume the manatees.
Commensalism-an interaction between species where one species benefits and does not affect the other. We can see commensalism in the manatee's environment between phytoplankton and sea birds where they use the nitrogen from the bird's feces to create nutrients
Organization of Ecology-Ecology has certain 'levels' that are used as measurements. It goes individual, which is a single organism, makes up a population. Multiple different populations then make up a community. Multiple comminities make up an ecosystem, multiple ecosystems make up a biome and finally multiple biomes make up a biosphere.
Limiting Factors-factors that limit the amount of species that can live in a given area. Theere are 2 types of limiting factors.
Density Dependant Factors- Factors that are dependant on the number of animals in a given area. An example of this is living space
Density Independant Factors- Factors that are not influenced by the number of anumals in a given area. An example of this is natural disaster
Biomass-an amount of usable energy in an ecosystem. Manatees use some of the biomass to survive
Biodiversity-the diversity of the life in an ecosystem. Manatees are crucial for providing biodiversity and limiting the growth of plant life that would overtake the biodiversity
