In this project, we found a way to purify water for people in need.
Our Presentation
Overview
In this project, we learned a lot before beginning our project. We first studied the Flint Water Crisis so we could understand an example of failed water purification. We then spent 3 weeks learning about different types of bonds, as a huge part of our project and filtration relates to bonding between different elements like chlorine and the water we are drinking. We then spent 3 weeks on our project. In this time, we first found came up with our idea of a machine that can filter water and boil out the bacteria. We then researched the energy needed to boil water, and decided solar power would be an excellent source for this power because it is a low amount of power that is needed and solar power can be used by anyone. We then designed our filter. Next, we made the agar to grow bacteria to test if our boiling and fitlration process would kill off bacteria.
Reflection
In this project. one of my peaks was participation and taking a form of leadership. I made many more decisions in this project when compared to what I have done in other projects, and also contributed many more tangible things rather than research. In the future I hope to keep contributing like this to other projects. Another peak I had in this project was keeping myself on task. I made sure to manage myself and keep me working on the task at hand as well as tasks that needed to be done. In the future I hope I can maintain this work ethic.
One pit I had in this project was preperation. Our presentation was very last minute, and I feel like it showed. I also didn't make sure to have everything ready when my group needed it. In the future, I hope to ensure my work is finished at the proper time. Another pit I had in this project was pushing the boundaries. The project we made was a pretty standard for what we were given, and I didn't do anything to make it really stand out from the rest of the groups. In the future, I hope I can contribute more original ideas to projects and try to push myself to do better than the last project.

Concepts
Voltage-The potential differnece from one end of a component to another. In our project, we calculated the minimal voltage needed for our battery to hold at least .34 kWH
Solar Power- Power derived from the UV rays of the sun. This power is converted in solar panels into usable energy. We used solar power to power the heating coil of our machine
3D Printing-The process of making physical 3-dimensional objects from digital files. This works by taking a model and "slicing" the model into hundreds or even thousands of small layers to then be printed. We use 3D printing to create the shell of our machine.
Filtration-The seperation of solid matter from liquid matter. There are many different layer of filtration, going from macrofiltration to reverse osmosis. Our filter is a microfilter thanks to the sand and activated charcoal
Chemical Bond-A lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables the formation of chemical compounds. Many different elements, like iron and copper, can bond with water, making unsafe for consumption. Our filter breaks bonds by seperating them with the activated carbon, which bonds to the water molecules and breaks other bonds
Agar-A gelatinous medium used as a medium for bacteria to grow on. We made 3 plates with the same agar, and used them to showcase bacteria growth within our project.
Solution: A mix of a solvent and a solute. Solvents desolve the solutes, forming a solution when the two mix. An example of this is a lot of the metals found in unsafe drinking water being a solute, and th ewater being a solvent
pH-pH, or potential of hydrogen, is a scale used to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is. PH is measured on a scale of 1-14 with higher pH means more basic, while lower pH means more acidic. We tested the pH of our water to make sure it was in a safe range for human consumption(6.5-8).
Bacteria-A group of single celled organisms with cell walls, but lacking organells. Bacterium spread extremely quickly, and some can be harmful to human
Virus-An infective agent that consists of a nucleic acid molecule. Virus are most often harmful to organic life, and use organisms to spread
